Summary: There is an infestation of the mountain pine beetles destroying millions of lodgepole pine trees on the west coast. The problem is that this species are a small diameter tree so its structural support is a large factor in harvesting the trees quickly. Sadly non-access roads, fuel, labor, saw mills, transportation, etc. is making it difficult to harvest them on time increasing fire hazards and loss of material. Another problem is how to use this large surplus of material faster then it is coming in. These 4 articles explain the forward movement in trying to solve these problems.
